consider acts like those occuring in china, the "killing rooms" and violent treatment of those who voice their political opinions. Are we more cruel now than we were say, at the time of the spanish inquisition and before? is war getting bloodier or less bloody? is the treatment of prisoners, women, refugees etc improving around the world, or worsening?

It's not us as Americans, it is only the Bush administration.

For every atrocity today, you can name a dozen from history.

Killing Rooms in China?
Killing Fields in Cambodia.

Suicide bombers in the Mid east?
Suicide bombers attacking aircraft carriers in WWII.

We could carry on like this all day-- but the answer to the question is unclear.

Either, humanity is exactly as bloodthirsty and barbaric as it ever has been,

OR

Things are slowly getting a little better. The worldwide presence of the Internet and cheap cameras in everyone's hands makes committing atrocities much much harder to do and get away with. Ruthless governments can no longer just murder people, dig mass graves and then deny anything ever happened. Nowadays, the evidence gets out and (at least) people know about these things.

In a word, no.

If you study history, you'll find humanity has always had a cruel and barbaric edge. There is little difference now than from thousands of years ago, just the technology has changed. Compared to the distant past, modern man is fairly tame. I have to agree with the first poster, however, in that an administration that represents the view of 25% of the American population in supporting torture techniques going back to the Spanish Inquisition is a big step backwards and doesn't reflect the majority of good people any more than Kim Jong Il or any other dictator represents the majority of his people. Most humans just want to live, love, laugh, and watch their children grow old.

Check out Vlad the Impaler, or Caligula, or one of the other big villians of history, and you'll get my drift.

Those are some very serious questions. I am afraid you will get as many answers as there are people. First, we are not all one race, we are one species...human. I think! And as such we all seem to be able to justify our (and I must include myself, because I am a part of life on this planet) acts by whetever we "deam" necesarry! Every good and holy book ever written says "do not kill" and "love thy brother" in one fashion or other but we don't listen. We justify horror in the name of "The Almighty"! A day will come when we all will have to face our Maker, no matter what we call Him. Then we will know the acts we committed were not in His name!!

we are becoming milder in nature and less insane than we have ever been in regards to what we think is right or wrong. we in the west have better spin docters who via the media are able to make us perceive that life is a lot better and that we live in a free democracy. communists are a bit more blatent because they are a bit thicker and are not attempting to win an idiological war i.e the war of the mind e.g public opinion. our life style in the west is less savage than of the east so if we win the war of the minds all over the world people would be better off. as long as are minds are dived and we catogoricaly attempt to succeed at the demise of each other unsuccessful cultures have no where to go. but nature wont allow that to happern so these unhappy people draw on their last resorce in order to succeed which is aggresion. in order to succeed in that culture or enviroment you need to be more aggresive than the next man and that is how you learn your behavour at that impressionable age which normally determines your out come in life. the successful think to much of them selves and exhibit their hiorachy. we bully so that the victim develps low self esteem which gives the bully a better chance to procreate. out of guilt we justify our actions. we invent reigeon to justify our existance. in truth we know nothing all we have is humanity but at the moment we are and allways have been week parasites who feed off their own kind as a result of primitive govenment idiology and methodology a.k.a divide the mind and coqure whilst we are at our most impresionable age. it keeps govenments economically strong. but to answer your question we are still aggresive week insane parasites who does not recognise humanity.

I have no specific data on this, but my personal impression is that the negative choices you provide supply the correct answers. This is based on TV news reports I've seen, as well as people I've encountered. Not a happy situation for us, I'm afraid. People are becoming more rude, insensative and unwilling to compromise. Tsk Tsk - maybe it will improve one day!

Well its a cycle, but if you look at it humans were always barbaric, its just looks in zoom format today beacuse our weapons are different, our population is more, there is huge gap between the thought flow we have... so the conlcusion is we have not changed much, or can we say we have not learnt much...for past mistakes

I would say yes cos in my own part of the world, real crazy things happen and there is just noting no one can do about it.

Remember as lots of good still exist, the bad always out number them.

It's hard to say, but a long time ago, you were punished for defying the king, or treason and such, today you get punished for stealing murder and stuff like that..... but then there's always the other side of the story
