does that mean your roof is a rubber roof or a tar roof? I can't imagine that it is tar. Please help me figure this out.

Assuming it's not a metal roof.....The silver is most likely a coating used to repair an old roof that was leaking. Underneath the coating could be either asphalt, thermoplastic, rubber or even tar.

To possibly determine what kind of roof is underneath take a look at areas where flashing was applied or near the roof edges. You may be able to see what is underneath.
