Try the key-on-off trick. Insert key, turn to "on", (not start), then "off" then on, off, on and stay there. If you have a digital odometer the codes may be displayed there. If the check eng light flashes in a pattern, write the pattern down. IE: 2 flashes-pause-3 flashes-pause-4 flashes would be code 234, etc.
Not sure if this will work on yours but it works on my Dodge.

That model year vehicle has a OBD II ECM (electronic control module) system. You will need to take it to a reputable auto repair facility, or , if you have a friend who has a handheld code scanner for OBD II systems. You can also go to advance or autozone. they will do it for free. Or if you are willing to purchase one, you can, they are very simple to use. they cost around $150, give or take. Codes on the OBD II type system can only be retrieved and erased with a code scanner.

Check the following site. It has instructions on how to obtain the codes by turning the ignition key several times. It also has what the codes mean. http://www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html ... Hope it works for you ... If not Autozone or another parts store may read the OBD for free. ...Good Luck...

I don't the specific of your car, but most (if not all) post 1996 ODBII cars are scanned the same way. There's a ODBII connnector just in front of the driver's knee area.
You connect a ODBII scanner and follow the direction.
Good Luck.
