depends on the company, but the average wage is $50000-$70000 Canadian dollars/year which would be equivalent to 46,000-64000 American$. The average on road is .35-.40/mile and working short haul or local is about $15-23/hour. Depends really if you want to be home every day or away for 2-3 weeks at a time. I work locally now after listening to my wife complain after our boy was born. After our girl was born I stayed local. Currently I am making C$19.50 after 2 raises and 1 year with this company and average 50 hours per week. Hope this helps.

You have a poor perception of what truck driving is really like. My advice would be to go to a truck stop and talk to some drivers or just sit and listen to other drivers talk instead of believing what you read in a book or were told by a driving instructor. You can handle working 10 hours, but would prefer 8. That needs to be more like you can handle working 16-18 hours but would prefer 11. You are in good shape and sleep well. You may stay in shape, but you will no longer sleep well. As an over the road driver, you will get paid either by the mile or a percentage of the revenue to the truck.( percentage you only get paid for loaded miles ) With most companies, you will get paid stop off pay for stops after the first one. With most companies you will be donating your time (at least two hours) while loading and unloading. you will be donating your time while sitting, waiting for your next load.( sometimes 1/2 - 3/4 of a day or more ) With some companies you will be required to drive 11 hours and then unload your truck. They will pay you about half or less than what they will pay someone else ( a lumper or lumper service ) to unload it. Bottom line is, if you put a value on your time, truck driving might not be the job for you. .

In the U.S over the road drivers get paid by the mile ( .33 - .50 cents/mile). Some over the road companies pay a percentage of what the load pays. Most local companies pay by the hour, while some do pay a percentage of what the load pays. Some are paid by weight ( by the ton, dump trucks, coal trucks). The company I work for now pays by a formula. The weight, miles, stops, and revenue of load all factor in to what the load pays.
You do not need to start driving a small truck to get in to a tractor - trailer. Even with 20 years in a smaller truck, you will still not have the experience needed to drive a tractor-trailer. There are many companies that will train you to drive a tractor trailer.
If some one you know had to pay for the fuel, then they did not read the contract very well. If there was no contract and they still fueled the truck up, and it was not there responsibility they should have left for another company. There are hundreds of thousands of jobs in the transportation industry that don't require one to pay for the fuel.

Depend mostly on experience, i said if you new probably little over 10, experience easily over 20, also depend on corporation, pay is not everything, you should also look at benefit, medical insurance isn't cheap. But many truck driver start like smaller more like van and bus before truck.

Like Big Rigs? 18 wheelers?
Depends on the company.......but I think they get paid per mile and not by hour. I think it also makes a difference if they're long haul truckers (Over the road I think it's called), or guys that stay local and are "home at night"
