I'm looking for some new books to read this Christmas, fiction mainly (no war books).

A break from the mainstream circuit of the classics e.g: Orwell-Stephen King-Catch22- Catcher in the Rye-War and Peace-Dan Brown-Ludlam-Clancy is the main aim.

Can you recommend any good reads? The main theme I'm looking for is Michael Marshall-Smith kind of books, and a friend has mentioned that Dean Koontz is a good read also.

Cheers

You could do a lot worse than Hitler and Stalin: Parallel Lives by Alan Bullock. Allow me to quote;

About Stalin collectivization of agriculture, "The confusion and misery caused by this rape of a traditional society in which the lives of 120 million lives who lived on the land, were wrenched out of their accustomed ways begger description. It was more than flesh and blood could stand"

About Hitler's Holocaust "The women were allowed fifteen minutes because they had to have their heads shaved. The hair was sold for the manufacturing of matresses. It was this 'routinization' of extermination which adds a unique touch horror to the already sickening cruelty and dehumanization which became 'normal' behaviour throughout the camps

It is important to put the figures on record, but because they have the effect of numbing the imagination, it is equally important to underline that every single figure in these millions represents acts of cruelty, terror and degradation inflicted on an individual human being like ourselves, a man, a woman, a child or even a baby"

Im not saying it puts you in the mood for Christmas....but its a compelling and unrivalled book of the subject.
