the Germans were the last key opposition to the Allies in 1918, by which time she was in a terrible domestic state, with riots and strikes almost everywhere because of food shortages and a long and tedious war. This loss of support at home due to domestic problems led to a key loss of support for the war. As a result of this Germany could no longer afford to wage such an offensive war and her days were numbered as America joined in 1917 and crushed the last significant German offensive. This arrival of fresh troops crushed German morale, crucially leading to loss of support for the war on the German frontlines. Consequently, Germany could not hold out and on 11th November a ceasefire was ordered. Germany also asked for an armistice, which was the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. At the Treaty of Versailles the Americans and French wanted to heavily punish Germany for the damage she had done during the war whereas Britain olny wanted her naval power reduced to protect Britain's own naval superiorority. This humiliation (germany was blamed for the war and had to pay £6 billion and lost a high amount of her colonies/land) led to a rise in German nationalism that led to the rise of Hitler and support for the Nazi regime, which was crucial to the outbreak of orld War 2 in 1939.

With Germany's decision to seek an armistice - or face domestic as well as military collapse - arrangements were set in place to convene a peace conference in Paris; the city was unanimously selected by the Allied powers. The peace treaty was called the Treaty of Versailles. Go to the link for a full report of the signing.
