There is a very special teacher of mine, who I have been pretty close with for about 3 years. Not in a sexual way or anything, but she has helped me so much, talked to me when I needed it, and I know she cares. Even if it's only her job to do so. Last year I wrote her a card expressing how much she helped me, and how much I appreciated it, and she teared up (as did I, I was going through a very tough time, and she was one of the only people to help me get through it). Christmas is coming up, and I wrote her another card. I basically said that I appreciate everything she has done (and, I'm gradding this year) and that she helped me when I needed it the most, I could never thank her enough and that she's a very important person to me, and might always be!
I said some other things to, but I just want to know if that's weird? I mean, should I just say "Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays" and leave out the whole "thank you so much" stuff?? Do you think that's "unprofessional"?

I have loved many students over the years and been close to them as they tried to survive their struggles. I have a very good sense as to keeping our boundaries and yet allowing them to use my support. It is a delicate balance, but it sounds like both of you are respecting the boundaries that must exist.
We all have students who have touched our hearts and when it comes time for these kids to go, it is sad, However, we know that we are meant just to be a good memory and that these kids need to go on to their destinies.
Making a nice memory by thanking your teacher for what she has done and what she has meant to you is not out of line. Just understand that ethically, she can't really respond in kind. It doesn't mean she doesn't care. It means she knows that the best thing she can do for you is to keep you unencumbered by her own feelings. You'll make her quite happy.

I think it's incredible! What a wonderful gesture of appreciation for all she's done for you. I'm not yet a teacher, but was a para for many, many years. In a small box on my desk, I've kept the notes and cards like yours that I've recieved over the years. They are worth more than gold! Being able to connect with a student and be a guiding force in their life is a wonderful thing.

I think that's wonderful! Teaching is often a thankless job, and I think the teacher should know you appreciate her! I think you are totally within bounds -- and especially since this is your last year, it's great to let her know.
In fact, if you keep her on your Christmas list even after you graduate, that would be a wonderful thing!
Also, being grateful is a good thing for you -- you realize you have lots to be thankful for!
It's better to say too much, than to not say anything.
