He was the 4th century Bishop of Myra in Lycia, which was in the Byzantine Anatolia who gave gifts to the poor. During that time I believe Latin was the language used. Later on Santa emerged in Europe from Italy to Iceland. He was always depicted as a Bishop. So to those who say we have lost the meaning of Christmas, well he seems to be a Christian Santa giving gifts to the poor.
