Do you have any tips how I can preserve my begonias during the holiday season? I am going away for 12 days, then back for 3 then away again for 8. I give them about 250ml of water every 2nd day and they are indoors. Do you think they will still be alive when I come back or should I rather leave them with a friend?

begonia's are tropical, you can water it good and then set the pot down in a bowl of water so that the soil can soak up the water while your gone ( make sure there are holes in the bottom of your planter/pot). Key is, remove and let the soil dry almost completely out when you get back... and then go back to your normal watering schedule. If you don't let it dry out almost completely for a few days... you might get root rot. Also, get a piece of styrofoam and take a screwdriver and poke some holes in it... place it on top of some water (as in floating) take some snippits of your plant, remove some bottom leave and poke through the styrofoam so that the bottoms of the stem cutting are in the water submerged well. where the leaves were you should get new root growth... those are known to be easy plant starters. so if anything does happen to your plant while your gone, you have several more to take its place... once the roots get good and started.. remove and put in soil.. hope this helped.

Have your friend come in and water them.

Take cuttings, strip lower leaves, put in clear containers of water. when you get back from the 12 day trip, you should have roots. Just in case the "mother plants" don't make it, you'll have begonia kids that will survive.

bon voyage
