Managerial skills learned in school are not the same as what is learned from work experience, but the two work well together. A working manager, for example, has a much more holistic experience. The decisions which have to be made are not always clearly defined and are not limited to a few factors. It is difficult to simulate the stresses and pressures which a real manager feels in the classroom. On the other hand, a working manager's experience is limited to one (or a few) company and to the circumstances which happen to arise during his/her tenure there. A student can learn about a broad range of experiences faced by managers in a variety of companies and similar situations, whether they arose this week or twenty years ago, here or in a distant country. Ideally, a manager would have a combination of experience and education.

I saw a situation arise earlier this week which made me aware of the shortcomings of experience. I was in a store, standing at the counter where two women were working. A manager walked out and started screaming at the women in front of everyone for not working more quickly. No one wanted him to turn his anger on us, so no one said anything to him about his inappropriate outburst. It was only once he left that we commiserated with the sales clerks. The problem was that this man got no feedback on his bad technique. Had this been a school exercise, someone would have told him how inappropriate it was.

It differs from job to job. It's important to match your skills with the job.
