I completely agree - I do think that it is a person's own choice how much they spend on xmas but I know id rather spend my money on lovely prezzis for my son than give it all to Mr Brown and his minions so they can use it to bomb middle eastern countries, dig up roads endlessly and give some to those that couldnt be bothered to insure their houses against the floods!!

Not necessarily, the amount the Government 'taxes' us, but how they spend those 'taxes' when they have received the money that is the problem. For instance, a large majority of the population didn't in 2003 support the war in Iraq, nor the attack on the Taliban government in Afghanistan. These two items alone have cost us, the British Taxpayers £Billions. And yet,our National Health Service, despite the increased amount of money being given to it is still suffering and Doctors and Nurses are being made redundant and wards closing. The Education system is faring no better and schools are closing and teachers too being made redundant.

Yes we are taxed far too much in this country and the incompetent government seem to waste so much of that money.
However, there is a simple way to avoid going into large debts at Christmas. Don't get carried away buying things you cant afford. Every year it baffles me as to why people feel the need to spend so much money when they don't have it to spend, then moan about a self induced problem.
Its the thought that counts, don't get carried away with all the commercialism.
People should just enjoy any time off they have with friends and family, not at the shops with a credit card.

I begin to wonder who, is at fault here the government or, the consumer,I am of an age when credit cards were unheard of.
How did we manage without the credit card,?
From my recollection, the majority then, only purchased what they could afford, If you could not afford it do without,! that is no great hardship for anyone, and far better than the agonies many are going through with debt problems of their own making.
That advice is sound, thinking about it.the debtors now would wish that they had followed that.

While I agrree with you that we shouldn't be taxed so much, I can't help wondering why Christmas has to be about credits, money, spending, more credits, more spending...
I can't belive how people are rushing to spend money that they haven't even earnt until at least the middle of 2008. I'm sure your loved ones will still love you if give them something very inexpensive as presents.
I can't help laughing at all the people who decend on all the stores like vultures.

You are right about the tax, but I don't have a credit card. I have stopped doing so much overtime, because I can make just as much sitting in the house, as I am not paying as much tax. The system is whole system is wrong.
Good morning to you.

You are quite right saying we are taxed to death. However, Christmas is far too commercialised.I've learnt to curb my spending during the festive season. It's not easy, and it can be miserable, but I'd rather be careful than in debt.Nobody forces us to spend, we do it because we want our kids to have the latest games consoles, designer gear etc.But you have to cut your cloth accordingly.I have saved hundreds of pounds this year.Simply by cutting out buying gifts for older kids in the family that we don't see from one year to the next, and for relatives that have everything anyway.Me and my husband are taking his folks out for a meal instead of buying them presents this year. They have everything, holiday about 5 times a year, have no money worries. So, a friend of mine gave me the idea to treat them to a meal as she does it with her in-laws.

I don't understand why banks are suffering so much if the consumer is going to be overspending and therefore paying interest!
I like the way you think but I don't think it's quite that simple.
