It depends on what you suspect is causing it.

Human waste should not clog it unless you're eating something inedible. Hair and small items like tissue will melt at Liquid Snake Drano.

If you suspect something else (like plastics or rubber) and the plunger cannot remove it then you have to call a plumber. He will need to open and remove the offending object.

Depending on your abilities you may have a larger problem than you first expected. If you sewer water is backing up into your shower then the clog is not in the toilet.

You need to find your sewer main and have it snaked or cleaned to get rid of your problem.

A suggestion is to work your way down from the bathroom to the main and concentrate your efforts.

Sometimes a plumber is the only answer because to the tools we have that don't make sense for DIY to buy.

You must call a plumber. Something is stuck in the pipes and you're starting to get a backup, possibly from the street. Could be tree roots or something was flushed that got stuck. Remember to tell the plumber what you used. Good luck.

The blockage is not in the WC, it's in the soil stack, your shower waste should be independently bossed into the external soil stack, so: if your wc is backing up, and your shower is backing up, the blockage is below the shower waste on the soil stack.
Check to see if there is an access plate on the soil stack, if it is accessible, then remove it and clear the blockage, stand to the side when removing it, otherwise you'll literally end right up in the sh.i.t.e.

PS: If you live in a flat, with shared drainage, check to see if the people directly below you are experiencing any problems, if not, then it's what i have said.

first turn off the water to the toilet. next place towels around the base of the toilet. take the lid off the back of the toilet and start carefully removing the water. after you have removed as much of the water as you can, remove the supply line from the bottom of the toilet.( place a bowl under the supply line so it can catch any remaining water). next get a wrench and remove the nuts from the base of the toilet. there should be 2 of them. make sure your going the correct dirrection. lefty loosey ,rigrty tighty .careful around the porcilin toilet, if you break it its real real sharp so be gental. once you get the nuts off grab the toilet by the rim and lift straight up. it might be stuck so kinda rock it a bit, then pull straight up and move it away from the area. be sure to put a towel under the toilet and keep it level.
now you can put the snake down the toilet drain. this should get it done. when your ready to put the toilet back check the wax ring under the toilet to see if it will still be good enough to get a good seal! rock and press down on the toilet , replace the nuts, connect the water and then flush..
