without any regard for proof?

Seriously, with the net being as worldwide as it is, a person's reputation can be torn to shreds by one vindictive nutter.

Are there libel laws in place to avoid such occurances?

Unfortunately they can and often do. The number of times that I have read that the McCanns have murdered their daughter is countless without a single piece of evidence to back it up. As for the law of libel, yes if a person wanted to go to the trouble of suing one of these people they could and Yahoo would, by law have to cooperate. Be warned it could happen.

Evidence from the past few months show that people can make any kind of wild claim they like on boards such as these and will have an army of sheep following them bleating 'free speech', but if you make the most modest protest you will get some quite unpleasant reproaches for it!

I'm all for free speech, btw, but I believe that all rights come with responsibilities and that my right to free speech should not interfere with another person's right to be assumed innocent until (and if) proven guilty!

The left has been doing that for years. We are used to that and have learned to ignore them and laugh at them. Shrill should be part of your description along with wild and frenzied. If libel laws would pay out, George Bush could be wildly wealthy.

Never fails! Check these Yahoo Answers.....

Everyone accused Barry Bonds of taking steroids when he
never tested positive for those drugs.....

People accusing the US for starting the Iraq and Afghan war "just because" we're bullies.....

People picking that Demo candidate with a terrorist sounding name over a true American, Hillary Clinton all because he's photogenic and Oprah endorses him?????

Members of the public demeaning the US by saying that we're warmongers and "terrorists" for starting wars, when we're the ones getting attacked by aggressive actions of other countries?

It is human nature - today, yesterday, tomorrow no difference in making frenzied baseless accusations

laws are in place in some country's but the cost involved in tracing people and obtaining the required proof is prohibitive , so nothing will ever be done except in exceptional circumstances

The world today is so messed up that no one knows where to draw the line and they treat it like it doesn't matter anymore. So I wouldn't know what to think of that.

Who cares what people say on the Internet? The Internet is the dirtiest and nastiest thing in the world. If people can't deal with it they should go back to playing solitaire.
