could you please tell me the name of the book and why it is so effective

Catcher in the Rye, it was the only required reading that I had to read in high school that didn't feel like a "required" reading. It was effective because even though it was published in the 1950s, it didn't feel dated. Most of us experienced what Holden felt when he was a teenager, i.e. the need to rebel, alienation, ranging hormones, curiousity and confusion.

The Book Of Hiram by Christopher Knight & Robert Lomas. It pretty much settles most of the worldly questions that I had.

"Stranger in a Strange Land" by Robert Heinlein. It was the first time I had read an author proposing controversial viewpoints with cogent arguments to back them up.
