It is strictly impossible to stand in the "middle" of a rainbow that you can see. A rainbow always appears as a ring around a point-like light source (usually the Sun), and you will only ever see in in the direction of a light source. You will not ever perceive yourself to be in the middle of a rainbow, because a point-like light source cannot surround you, by definition.

If you run towards a rainbow, it will 'move' with you until there is no more mist/fog between you and the light source, at which point it will disappear. Not understanding what they are, people created all kinds of ridiculous stories about rainbows containing treasure, magic, etc.

You can see other people walk through a rainbow, but no matter how fast you run, by the time you get to it, it has moved out of your reach
