It breaks down into its molecules in the liquid. If you put salt in a glass of water, the salt is still in there, it has just separated into its ions, Na+ & Cl- (Sodium & Chloride), which are not visible to the naked eye.

When a substance dissolves, it does not disappear, it is still within the solution. You just don't see it because it ionized. Take table salt, for example. The sodium and chlorine atoms break apart when in water, so you don't see the salt anymore, but it didn't disappear.

It fits into the spaces between molecules of the solvent, or it binds to molecules of the solvent. Take salt, for example. In aqueous solution sodium chloride dissociates into positive sodium ions and negative chloride ions. Because the water molecule is bipolar, a sodium or chloride ion can stick to it.

it is mixed together with whatever it dissolves in. Some part goes to air and some part goes to the water in like Alka Seltzer.
