So, like the question says, I have a fire department interview. For my background check, I have to check 'yes' or 'no' to a bunch of boxes asking if I have ever been convicted of the following misdemeanors or felonies. Now when I was 16 I was dumb and stole a pack of playing cards from the store and got arrested. But I did the community service and all that jazz and they said that it wouldn't be on my record. Now I can understand that regular jobs won't see it, but since it's like the fire department, will they be able to see it? In essence, I just don't want them to find out the wrong way that I was convicted of it, but I checked 'no' for the box as if I was hiding it, you know what I'm saying?

I'm not sure your record was expunged maybe it was "sealed".
I went before a USCG evaluation or background check, and really forgot about a charge when I was 16(it was supposed to be "sealed" pending no further charges until I was 18), they found it. It didn't have an effect on there decision, do to the time frame that had past . They just wanted to see if I remembered , and to let me know , they knew. This was a government check. I'm not sure just how deep the fire dept can look, but my guess is they will find it. The charges of life never really go away , however the time with out charges, proves to show you've corrected your way. I'd tell them of it , at least to show your memory skills are stiil good.

These days, with all the stuff that's floating around on the Internet, the chances are that even a regular job is likely to find out about an expunged crime.

My advice? Answer yes, and explain it. The fire department probably won't care about a single juvenile misdemeanor for shoplifting. They WILL care if they catch you lying on your application.

They could find it if they really did an indepth background, but since it was when you were underage, they may not dig that far. Best bet, be honest if asked about it.
