I'm the kind of person that returns a crappy gift. I haven't had to do so in years, but I will if I have to. That's why they include the receipt along with the gift because they know what's up.

I would stick with the gift. That person didn't have to get me a gift. The gesture in itself is a gift too, so I wouldn't want to reject that nice gesture. I'd just tell the giver "thank you" and that's about it.

Depends on the cost, if its something expensive but crappy I will exchange it for something I want with a quickness, no sense and having something in your home you cant use right? I've never had to explain where something was , typically people know exactly what to get me so it rarely happens that I have to take something back

I'd say what's common: Thank you. Why are people so inconsiderate sometimes? It's a good thing you were even remembered. Imagine people less fortunate. Perhaps the gifts you don't want would mean the world to them.

If the gift sucks, return it and tell the giver it didn't fit or you already had it.

I will say thank you whether the gift is crappy or not and be sincere about it.

No, it's the thought that counts, but if I can't use it, there's not harm in re-gifting to someone who can use and appreciate it.

what i've done with gifts like that in the past is keep it for a while, like a year or something, then donate it to charity

Only if it is clothing and doesn't fit right, but I try to find the same thing. I always appreciate what people give me. I know that they did not have to get me anything.

I would keep the gift--it's the thought that counts.
