I remember years ago I saw this movie where the Barber would Slit peoples throats then pull a lever sending the bodies to the basement where some woman would bake them.... Is the Sweeney Todd movie (starring Johnny Depp) a remake version of that movie??

This is the same story, yes. Sweeney Todd, the "Demon Barber of Fleet Street", slits the throats of his victims and then sends their bodies into the basement so that the lady who owns the bakery, Mrs. Lovett, can put the "meat" of the victims into her pies.

It's a film adaptation of the musical stage play by Sondheim and it's BRILLIANT (I've been to a few advanced screenings, so I can tell you first hand that it was amazing).

The story has been around since the mid 19th-Century, and was made into a movie in 1936...but this particular adaption is based on the Steven Sondheim musical which debuted in 1979 and was itself based on a 1973 play by Christopher Bond.

...early horror/terror film exploitation producer, named Tod Slaughter, DID crank out, as well as star in a version of the story in 1936; perhaps this is the film you saw, way back then; in fact, Slaughter produced, directed and starred in a slew of similar murder/mystery/terror films, not unlike "Sweeny Todd"...

Why yes, it is. It was also a play on Broadway starring Angela Lansbury.
