what happens? do they just look in the store for that person or do they file a police report? do they call the police? more specifically for items 20 dolllars or less

It's hopeful that your friend will arrested before he starts doing more than just stealing. If he doesn't stop he just may end up as a special guest member of the A S O A club which stands for AS$ STUFFERS OF AMERICA located in your nearest men's jailhouse and prison system.........

Usually, if the theft value is comparatively small and the thief has left the store chances are the police would be notified if only to be on record .If the police can identify the thief they may contact the robber and have him make restitution. It would appear that no criminal charges would be filed.

If they can identify you from the tapes, they can file charges against you regardless of whether you are still in the store or not. Value of the item doesn't matter, theft is theft.

It's up to the store to decide if they want to file a complaint.
I hope they do.

I hate shoplifters so much since I work at a gift shop. Second, it's a non-profit store. it's pissing me off.....
