Actually, alimony has to do with the non-economic value the wife has donated to the family considered with the relative standard of living the parties enjoyed while married. Not to mention if her career can be fostered by temporary payments that help to balance out what she offered to the marriage in support of the husband obtaining what is really marital property in his name solely.
Now that I have completely given you a more seriously answer than you are looking for, I would like to have someone cook, clean and do my laundry but I can't afford an ex-wife or a maid so too bad.

Hell no we shouldn't. I don't want to cook and clean for my ex husband. Then maybe your kinda right i shouldn't be living off him either. hold up yeah what about all the free cooking and cleaning we did before the divorce. I want my husband to give me half off his money and property if we get divorced.

It's not a salary.
The court has agreed that she gave up any chance of earning a good living in order to stay home for him for life, and he has to keep that part of their marital agreement until her situation changes - like if she gets job training or gets married again.
