To remove the rust present (providing it is a surface rust and not embedded), use 0000 steel wool with gun oil, scrubbing lightly. Once you have it clean, wipe the metal down with any good gun oil. Do not use commercial oils like WD40. It is not designed as a rust preventive,,,just as a lubricant. Whether I fire them or not, I wipe down all my weapons every 6 months with gun oil (I personally use Hoppe's). Every time you fire a weapon, clean it and oil it. You will never have rust blooms coming back. I hope that helps you.

I don't own a gun, but I know that iron rusts. Living near a beach doesn't help.

1.Rub it down with a cloth lightly soaked in oil (remember, oil-soaked cloth can self-ignite if you leave it laying around, so research that a little). The fine coat of oil will protect it.
2) Also there's this stuff called oilcloth (not the same as a cloth soaked in oil.) That people use to put tools into to prevent rust.
3) Talk to a gun store.

coat it with a light coat of gun oil. Store it in a case in an inside closet. Yes, living near the beach can cause the problem.

its good to oil it after cleaning. You can also store it in a Gun sock, that prevents rust. You can also get dessicant paks that absorb moisture and store them with the gun, no moisture=no rust

Use a good gun oil and don't touch it with your bare hands, used cloth gloves. W-D 40 remember is a cleaner, not an oil.

oil it. if it's real bad you may try to spray it down, inside and out w/like WD40 and warp it in old sheet or t-shirt. just wipe it off and "OUT" before you go out to shoot. if it an loder gun you may check into having it re-blued, supposing it's blue, #1 keep a lite coat of oil on it at all times.
