Wow...tough one to answer.

I loved jim courier's game a lot. While Vilas grew up on the clay, and had pretty good success on grass, it was in an entirely different era...long before the power game of tennis came to be.

They both won 4 grand slams. But Courier reached the finals of every single one...losing to Edberg at the US Open, and to Sampras at Wimbledon. Courier reached #1 in the world in a time where Sampras, Agassi, Edberg, and Becker were all in their primes...while Vilas could only reach #2.

Courier could beat Sampras on hard courts, Agassi on clay (at that time, Agassi was one of he premiere tennis players on dirt), and Edberg on grass.

it's a tough call, but during those 4 years which Courier was at the top of his game, i'd have to say Vilas wouldnt be able to combat his power, tenacity, and conditioning.

Guillermo Vilas on clay, Jim Courier on a hard court, and on grass it would be a toss up.

Vilas>>>>>>>>>Courier
Courier had a mean forehand on clay especially but after Borg who called Paris his backyard,Guillermo Vilas with all due respect to Nadal was the prince there.

Vilas, without doubt.
I saw him play up-close and personally.
I have never since seen someone who could impart such spin and deceptiveness on the ball.
He was also World #1 there for a while.
He was uncanny and never ruffled.
Jim was great but spent most of his years at No 2 or 4.

Tough question whenever you mix eras, wood and composite rackets. Give them both wood, and Vilas probably would win. No roll over though.
