That fact that they are part of your motivation does not make them meaningful. The satisfaction that you get out of this situation is not meaningful since you are the one that choose whether is a satisfaction or not.

The only meaningful task will be the one that was not chosen by you to satisfy you, instead was chosen to you to satisfy others because you are less attached to what they consider satisfaction for themselves.

Tell them what a great job they are doing and care about them and their needs. When someone is having a bad day take the time to listen what wrong. It does not always have to do with work, it could be something in their family. Listen to them, if you can help, do it. ( Does not always have a $ attached) Don't be one of those bosses, who only care about your world and your pocket. Have family parties what include the kids, (if they want them there) Have a small christmas party, Valetines, Fourth of July, ect. It does not mean a big dinner or such, just cookies and such. Show that they do matter, you would be suprised at the differ it makes to many people. Remember Birthdays, even just a card, an e mail, or maybe lunch. Good luck

By not being an idiot. The answer is in the question - Meaning full to the employee and not just busy work. Ask the employee. Each one has different definitions of satisfaction.
Listen, study some economics and scientific management, it should keep you busy long enough to stop bothering the employees.

You should take time to find the points of the job that drew the employee to the company in the first place. Make the goals about things that the employee enjoys that way the ones they don't really enjoy they will still seek to complete because they feel that they are all relevant to them.

incentives based on productivity? eg. in the instance of small business, 0.5% of business profits as a christmas bonus, therefore EVERYTHING they do is helping to acheive something for themself and not just to fill another persons pockets.
