Weight
It could be many things. They didn't eat well before and their metabolism slowed down so, they gain weight.
They could have been obsessed with being thin and learned to love themselves for who they are and not what they look like and gained some weight.
They could have had children and not lose the weight. They could have a disease that slows down the metabolism or causes weight gain. They could be taking medication that increase the appetite, which may cause weight gain.
They are not as active as they use to be because P.E. is not required. No more cheerleading, basketball, baseball, tennis, dance team etc.
Could have Binge eating disorder.
Got comfortable with the spouse or boyfriend and doesn't feel the need to look the best.
I had a friend who gained weight after having her child and the husband didn't like that she was working out to lose weight because he was afraid that other men would look at her in the gym and that other men would be interested in her and he thought, that with her being heavier she is less desirable and he can feel more secure.
Dirty:
Now as far as being clean is concerned, they have been very dirty but their parents kept them in check.
There is the issue of drugs and alcohol which may change someones attitude about their appearance, usually when they are addicted.
Cannot afford to wear the finest or lastest fashion and shelter with running water.
Don't have time to do anything but work, take care of the kids, clean, cook etc. No pedicure, no manicure, no shower because they passed out on the couch.
Note: It could be anything, no one except that person can tell you and who knows if they would. Some people care and some don't, so I wouldn't ask. Just take care of yourself and be the best person you can be. How they treat themselves is their choice.

People spend so much time on looking good to find a mate, and when the search is over, so is the effort.
That's why people should always look presentable, because you never know, if you get divorced, or your mate dies, getting back in the dating game could be almost impossible.

Maybe they don't realize that they have let themselves go. Maybe they just do what they want and they don't care about what other people think anymore. Anyway, maybe they have better things to worry about...like their children or something.

Someone told me years of being married does that too you. You get tired of trying to impress the person you have been with for years, and you just stop caring.

They just don't care anymore for some reason. They get lazy, "Eh, Martha, hand me those cheese puffs. Let's watch "The Apprentice". Go figure.

I suspect that they never took care of themselves to begin with... but when you're young it never shows.
