i just got a external hard drive and now my laptop seems to be running slower when its connected

Start > Run > services.exe
Start > Run > msconfig

Go to these two and shut down unnecessary processes. They will make your computer load up to 3x as fast, depending on how bogged down with apps you are.

This is because your external hard drive is bogging down your processor, which is the central heart of your laptop's speed. Doubts exist there's much you can do to improve your system's speed, barring the installation of a much faster processor.

Yeah, the hard drive is taking up some of your resources. Not much you can do about that.

It's probably because of memory. Upgrade it.

if you installed software with it, remove the software and just plug it in.
