6 cylinders 2.5 litre ....i understand the cylinder but what does the litre mean in a cars engine

It is a measurement of the volume inside all of the cylinder's combined. If each cylinder had 1 litre above the piston to the cylinder head, and you had 6 cylinders - you would have a 6 litre engine.

2.5 liters is the capacity of the engine in liters, effectively the amount of gasses that the engine pumps in one complete cycle. So in a 6 cylinder 2.5l or 2500cc engine each cylinder has a capacity of 417cc or 25.44 cubic inches.
