Taranto's right about the CSU system not being all that great. It's definitely not on par with Berkeley or Harvard. But with that said, Cal State LA is good for a few things. They have a good nursing program that has a wait list of two or three years. They admit a lot of local students who would have otherwise been overlooked by colleges. I know two guys in particular who stand out in my mind. One was a HS dropout teen dad. He's earning his degree in sociology at Cal State LA so he can provide better for his child. Another guy I know went to graduate school with me at USC. He barely finished HS with a 2.7 GPA, went to Cal State LA, got a BS in exercise kinesiology, a MS in the same subject, went to USC and studied public health with me and now he's at SDSU working on a PhD. He's also got several research papers published. I am proud to call this guy my colleague (and friend!).
So Cal State LA is a good place to bring yourself out of the barrio (it's in East LA, after all), a good place to make something good of yourself.
But if you want a CSU in So Cal with a better reputation, check out Cal Poly Pomona, CSU Long Beach, CSU Fullerton or CSU Northridge.

As a professor at the University of SouthCentral Los Angeles, I would say it is an outstanding school. The programs offer real case studies, assignments and teach students to excel in the real world.

None of the CSU schools are highly regarded or very selective. CSU-LA is no exception. 75% of those admitted have an SAT score under 1000/1600.(to put things inperspective -- 75% of those admitted to UCLA have SAT scores of 1300 or better).
