A book can be fiction, a newspaper is not. Newspapers are daily, books are not. Most newspapers have an online edition, most books do not (yes, you can have e-books, but it's not as though they are updated or have features). Books tend to be longer than newspapers. Books rarely come with inserts. A book rarely has as many authors as a newspaper, unless it's a compilation or anthology (think Chicken Soup for the _____'s Soul).

Journalists have to make a story fit into a certain number of inches in a newspaper. Non fiction authors have the luxury of going into greater detail, citing sources etc. Journalists are taught to stick with who, what, where, when and why. Non fiction authors have more leeway - they can get more into things like how. Also journalists tend to be writing about things occurring at the moment. Non fiction authors can write about things that took place many years later, so they have the ability to show the ramifications.
