I've heard that if you have dust mites in the bedding the best way to remove them is vacuuming. I'm going to assume you've already done that to your carpet. You could always call an exterminator and see if the stuff they use to kill mites is different from fleas and ticks. If not then I would go to the local walmart or whatever and buy a can of flea/tick killer.

Are they mites or fleas? I would sprinkle the carpet heavily with baking soda and iodized salt mixed together... The BS will smother/kill live fleas and the salt will puncture/dry out the eggs/larve... PLUS as an added bonus the BS will destroy odors AND the salt will pick up any loose dirt... Just be sure to have extra vacuum cleaner bags and replace your vacuum filter... BS and SALT are super cheap at the wholesale club.. I buy BS 12 lbs. for under $5 and 2 lbs. of salt for around $3...
