Temperature change of the earth depends on change of heat on earth and this due to many factors such as solar heating, conversion of heat to other form of energy.
The most dominant factor is solar heat.
Recently the heat energy comes from the sun is absobed more than reflected caused by green house gases such as CO2 which capture the reflected infrared from earth surface and heat up the gases in such an amount increase the atmosphere temp.

It's been getting hotter since the mid 1800's based on thermal profiles in the earth's crust (such data may be inverted to produce a surface time history). Sunlight reflectivity is only one variable, however, that determines this. Infrared reflectivity from ground heat is another big one. And don't forget orbital and solar variations. Oh yes, and the number of pirates :-)
