I promised a turtle for my girls birthday next month. I since found out this is non turtle hunting season so the pet shops around here don't have any. Does anyone know anything about turtles. The kind that live on land? Thanks. Also any info in general about your experience with a pet turtle. Thanks!

LLLReptile.com has tortoises for sale. However, you should note this warning they have posted on the site about animal shipments:

"All animal shipments are shipped Fed Ex Priority overnight directly to your door. Live arrival can only be guaranteed when temps. in route are between 35-90 degrees. If the package is delayed by the carrier, our guarantee still applies!"

So, you may or may not want to order your tortoise at this time, now that cold weather has finally arrived. Even with the cold weather, you might not have a problem with shipping; but it's understandable if you wouldn't want to take the risk, since the guarantee would be void if the temperature drops. I can tell you from personal experience that they pack their animals quite well, as I recently ordered and received a corn snake from them.

I used to own a pet store and we shipped baby red eared sliders all over the country. Make sure you purchase from a reputable dealer who uses proper heat packing in shipping. What I have found with people buying turtles is that they don't realize the expense that goes into setting them up properly. On a positive note, they do make an unusual and educational pet for children. Good luck with your search!

Mail order is tricky this time of year- most good sellers will not ship in the winter, and one site whose name is often mentioned does not have a good track record.

It is always best to buy animals that you can actually see- I bet someone around you carries some, even in the winter.

Try http://www.turtleforum.com and see if they have any good listings right now.
