Cal Ripken Jr. He had a terrible batting average. Anyone can hit 3000 hits if they play over 2000 straight games. And get 400 home runs. He was a good player, just people think of him as one of the best shortstops ever. He's not that good. He even said he wasn't that good. He said he was just a grinder.

I would say Daisuke Matsuzaka, Derek Jeter, Jose Reyes, Torii Hunter, Barry Zito, Joel Zumaya and Trevor Hoffman are all overrated.

Carlos Beltran.
He is a career .280 hitter! He has high strikeout numbers. He does not steal a lot of bases. He had one great post-season in Houston, then everyone started to talk about him like he was the next great thing.
He is a 5 tool player - the 5th tool being over-rated.

This question tends to run towards the teams that get the majority of the hype, so yeah, a player like Derek Jeter probably qualifies. A good player for sure, but if Jeter played for the Texas, Seattle, Baltimore, Toronto or a host of mid-market teams, he wouldn't be held in such high regard.

I love how no one says A-Rod...cause he isn't...The most overrated player has to be Andruw Jones. To be completely honest with you-yeah he'll hit 40 to 50 homers, but he'll bat .220. I'd rather not have him batting 4th for me.

Without question in my mind it is Jason Giambi 236-14-39 last year, averaging about .260 over the past five years and making $20 million per year.

Derek Jeter is a joke, if you can't hit for power at the top of the order you need to steal bases and Jeter can't do either.
David Ortiz is an even bigger joke, he can't do anything but hit the long ball. Why does he even pretend to play first base?

Andruw Jones, He is a good defensive outfielder, but not as good as he used to be. Also, he can't hit for average, only swing out of his every at-bat.

David Wright and Jose Reyes. If they weren't in NY they would be just good players on a small market team.

For this year I would say Barry Zito. For the amount of money he was paid and his Win and Era putout wasn't what was paid for.
