You see them all over the place, never happy unless they are having a really good moan. My mother used to say, (that one is afraid to smile in case her face cracks), what makes people like that. I have always wondered about that, even in Church they have a permanent frown on their kipper, it is like the look of someone being tortured.

Redflag some people are just like that all the time. Even if they have everything they could dream of, they have have a moaning nature,I had a friend and even if she was told a really funny joke all she would say was O'aye nae bad. If you have ever felt like choking someone that was the way she used to make us all feel.

I would have to say that it's just the way they were born.
Don't want to give personal info away, but you and I both know that when something really sad has happened in your life, you either let it drag you down or you learn to laugh again.
Must be in the genes.
You are very good at making people laugh. Thank you for the laughter you spread amongst us
Hugs xx

Most of that does fit me to a degree except for the "moaning never happy". I have been asked many times over why I don't smile. On the inside, most of the time I am smiling. I know what it is with me, but I can only speak for my self as to why I am that way. I have been abused for many years and the scar is very deep, I also suffer from depression because of all the abuse that I went through as well. I have walked on egg shells for a long time. I never know when someone is going to get mad at me over something. Yes my self esteem is very low as well. Now you know why I do it, although I don't do it on purpose. It's like I am in a shell that I am scared to come out of.

There are people who seem like they are only happy if they are miserable. It's as if they get something out of finding the worst in every situation. Maybe it's a form of control for them or maybe they think if they already feel bad towards everything, they won't be disappointed when things aren't so good. People always comment on my smile, it doesn't cost me anything to at least try to brighten someone's day. Though I do realize not everyone appreciates that.---Luvs

It's not because they are older, they have probably been miserable all their lives. It starts with the screaming brat in a pram that the mother doesn't bother to control. On the other hand children from happy loving families generally grow up to be the nicest friends and neighbours.

Some people don't have a lot to smile about, health worries ,pain in every step they take , financial constraints, bleak outlook for the future, family problems etc, etc, it's very hard being old for some people with such an unrealistic Government and paltry State pension to manage on.

I have been told that I am just the opposite. I look for the good in things and try to make the best in a situation. I know the world isn't all blue skies and butterflies, but it helps me get through the day, and a good chuckle never hurt anyone.

It's the way they identify themselves in life.
Whether because of the environment they were raised in or through life experiences, being dour, glum and moaning provided a means of coping with life.
On the other hand, they could just be butts.

Smiling doesn't come naturally to some people. They may be unhappy, negative, glass half empty types.
I am the opposite, I am generally smiling. I started a new job once and found out a couple of weeks later that some people referred to me a phony because I was always smiling ! I was stunned. I worked with the public and it was natural to smile. Oh well, they were probably the unhappy, negative, etc. types.

I used to get that growing up also. Mom or Dad would say it so funny I had to laugh. The ones in Church really get to me. They all these long faces as if they won't get their Jesus Cookie if someone knew what they had done. I personally when I go up for Eucharist with a big smile on my face as it is not a time to look so serious for all of what 5 minutes and to me it is a gift to receive and to be grateful for.
I think you need to keep the answers coming and you may just make one of them smile!!

Everyone constantly is telling me to smile. I am basically a very happy person, but yet my face doesn't show it. I get my expression from My Grandmother, an old indian woman.I am smiling on the inside! I cant help what I look like on the outside, but at least I know I am happy. Merry Christmas!
