They do not have to be the same color whether setting with placemats or a tablecloth. But you certainly can match them if that is the look you are going for. You can choose coordinating colors in solids or choose a print napkin that picks up the color of the mats or tablecloth. A patterned place mat or tablecloth can show well with a coordinating solid napkin. Your navy napkins would look better against a placement that has more gray. Taupe can show way too brown. You can also look at a cream color or even a soft yellow. If you wish a patterned mat than make sure the navy is somewhere in the pattern. Unless your plates are plain white, their color or pattern also determine what linen colors you need.

place mats and paper napkins and a pillow case on the lap when something is extra drippy. sometimes tucked under the chin.

ps we don't get many visitors and I am beginning to see a pattern here. hmmm.

no, it's just that much more stuff to have to clean. Unless I throw a big dinner party that I want to be really special. Which I did like once or twice.

We use metal chargers and cloth napkins. It is beautiful and elegant.

i use both i like it to look like you can sit right down put the napkin in your lap and eat... except you would need plates and i don't put that out...
