It means, when you're at your lowest point, when all seems lost and all hope seems to be gone, have hope, because things can only get better from there on.

You always see things at their worst just before things get better. Life is like a rollercoaster, you're down one minute and up the next. Just stay strong because peaks always follow troughs.

This refers to a special form of grace provided by God at the moment that it is needed the most.. If we reach a point when all seems lost we are able to accept a new path for our lives. In my personal experience I was devastated to see that all of the decisions that I had made and thought were good decisions led to nearly total destruction for me and my family. There a good deal written by Saints of their experiences with "The Dark Night of the Soul" (Saint John of the Cross). The spiritual reason for this is that frequently one needs to devote time during “the dark night” to do the necessary introspective soul searching that brings forth the magnificent brilliant light that will illuminate one's future path. I like Saint Teresa's analogy to the silk worm spinning its own cocoon and in order to emerge as a butterfly. This experience was so transforming that I celebrate each anniversary as a very personal Holiday shared only by God and me. Totally wonderfully indescribable transforming grace and in that moment you are certain that you have been in the presence of God.
