The Versus crew called him a future hall-of-famer tonight. Does he have the stats or hardware to back this claim up?

He has a Vezina.................but so does Jim Carey.

In my opinion, there are 3 sure-fire goalies going to the Hall of Fame
- Ed Belfour (1SC, 2 Vezinas, Calder, 3 Post Season All-Star Teams, 4 Jennings Trophies, 5 All-Star Games, Olympic Gold)
- Martin Brodeur (3 SC, 3 Vezinas, Calder, 6 Post-Season All-Star teams, 3 Jennings Trophies, 9 All-Star Games, Olympic Gold)
- Dominik Hasek 1 SC, 2 Hart, 2 Pearson, 6 Vezinas, 6 Post-Season All-Star Teams, 2 Jennings Trophies, 6 All-Star Games, 1 Olympic Gold, 1 Olympic Silver)

Note: He was also Czech Goaltender of the year 5 times and 3 times Czech Player of the year

The following are/will get consideration
- Tom Barrasso (2 SCs, Calder, Vezina, 3 Post-Season All-Star Teams, 1 All-Star Game)
- Mike Richter (1 SC, 2 All-Star Games (1994 All-Star Game MVP), 1 Olympic Silver Medal)
- John Vanbeisbrouck (Vezina, 2 Post-Season All-Star Teams, 3 All-Star Games)
- Mike Vernon (2 SCs, 1 Conn Smythe, 1 Jennings, 5 NHL All-Star games)
- Olaf Kolzig (Vezina, 1 Clancy Award,1 Post-Season All-Star Team, 2 All-Star games)
- Chris Osgood (2 SC, 1 Jennings, 1 Post-Season All-Star Team, 3 All-Star games)
- Curtis Joseph (1 Clancy Award, 2 All-Star games 1 Olympic Gold)
- Sean Burke (3 All-Star games, 2 Olympic Teams)

Panger's not even in the Meaford Sports Hall of Fame. The only HOF he is in line for is the one for bald half-pints!

Olie The Goalie

If the HOF voters consider the off-ice things that Kolzig has done, and the long term consistency of having a pretty decent GPA and Save% while on a terrible team, I have no problem with him getting in. He's never won a Stanley Cup, but he was the heart and soul of the Caps getting to the finals, and probably would have won if Hunter doesn't pick up the Prince of Wales. If he can backstop the Capitals for a few more years, and get into the playoffs and deep and maybe even sneak out a Stanley Cup, I say put him in on skills.

Btw, if Olie has Buffalo and Detroit and Ottawa like Hasek had/has, or Detroit like Osgood had, or Toronto like Joseph had, this discussion's not happening, and Olie's in. I can't say with 100% certainty he'd be able to do what Marty's done in New Jersey.

I think from a Caps fans perspective you gotta worry first about whether or not Ted will put his number up. It's a certainty, but with Ted, you still never know.

I have to say No. Yes, he has set team records, won the Vezina, been in a Stanley Cup Final and all that.
But the Caps have never been a true hockey power house and Olie's stats have suffered because of that.

Unfortunately, no. While his numbers are respectable playing for what have been some lousy Washington teams, 6-7 good seasons doesn't a HOF make (except if your Ken Dryden). I don't know if the fact that it took him ten years to become a starter hurt him as well. It's a shame, because his off-ice contributions have been extremely well received. Btw, Stanley Cups aren't the only criteria (Roland Melanson has his name on 3 of them, does he belong too?)

Now I'm not going to give my normal essay answer for this, but instead just add a little information about the HOF.

Instead of looking only at his NHL career, look at his career overall. NHL, Europe, World. The hockey hall of fame is not the NHL HOF but the Hockey HOF. Don't forget that when they add people it's based on every aspect of their careers, not just the NHL. That being said, there was a legnthy answer including 3 "sure-fire" goaltenders, and I think that had a fairly good summary.

His only claim to fame is his nick- name. Olie the goalie is not going to make the NHL hall of fame unless it under the "nick-name"category,which also leaves room for an even better goalie(Rolie the goalie) who will also not make the cut.

sometimes it's just not about stats or hardware.

personally i think he is a Future hall of famer, he has done tons of great things early in his career, from what i've heard he was an amazing goalie at the beginning of his career.
