I'm writing an essay for history and my assignment sheet says "You are a french citizen and you want the americans to help you fight against britian. Write an essay trying to convince america to side with you."
I'm basically saying in my essay how we (the french) helped the americans during the american revolution against the british and that they "owe" us.

How did the french help the americans during the american revolution?

And any more ideas?

One thing to keep in mind: French aid came to us because men like Benjamin Franklin and Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais persuaded King Louis XVI that it was in the interest of France to lend a hand.

From Louis' point of view Britain was the enemy, and promoting rebellion in the colonies was a just cheap way to cause trouble for George III.

I think we would have eventually, but the French certainly were a decisive factor. Once there was a significant effort by the colonists it would probably have continued until the British tired of the fight. Certainly the fact the British were greatly occupied with the French in the War of 1812 was a factor in our not getting our butts very severely kicked even more than they were. (Remember the British sacked and burned the Capital in that war.) We tend to underestimate the courage and resolve of the colonists who took the British on when they were undisputedly the best and most successful army in the world. But--as has been the case often in this country--the Revolutionary War was not a popular cause in England and I doubt the public would have supported the effort it would have taken to destroy the Americans.

In 1781, during the Battle of Yorktown, the British were out-numbered, more than 2 to 1. The British Navy tried to rescue Cornwallis and his troops, but the French fleet ran a blockade to prevent the English from landing at Yorktown, Virginia Colony, which forced Cornwallis to surrender.
This was the last major battle of the Revolutionary War.

We Americans will always hold a place in our hearts for the French. At least those who know anything about history.

Lafayette was instrumental and crucial for our win. There was no way that we could have done it without him, or the French help.

It did help that although the British troops were some of the best trained in the world, for some reason, their Generals during the Revolutionary War were some of the most incompetent anyone's ever seen.

At that time, France was one of the Superpowers, while we were just a few angry Colonists who didn't want to pay taxes. Their signing of the Treaty between our two countries was the recognition we needed to be seen as the new guys on the block. France is still the only major country in Europe that the U.S. has never gone to war with (there was the quasi-war with France in the early 1800's, but that was rather minor).

Vive La France!!! Forever!

They gave us their navy, and tons upon tons of military support. They're pretty much the reason we won.
