As many as you need to express your thought or idea in a clear fashion without creating a run-on sentence. There is no numerical limit; you just need judgment!

A semi-colon can be used to replace a comma in order to clarify. The best example would be a list of cities and states. i.e.

I have lived in L.A, CA; Boston, Ma; Charleston, SC; and Zion, Il.

Comma rules say put a comma after each word in a series of three or more items. In this case the sentence would be flooded with commas.

Theoretically by using this example you could have an infinite number, but don't do that.
