My husband is from the detroit area and wants to go back to settle and have and raise our kids there. He absolutely loves Detroit and tells me it will be great and safe, but all I ever hear about it and the surrounding areas is bad. (Muder, Theft, Rape, ect.) Is it truely possible to be safe and happy there and in the future raise a family there?

Dear Tee,
I remember when you asked almost the same question about a month ago; hence, I must conclude that you are not convinced that Metro Detroit is a safe and secure place to have a family.

There is no amount of pleading by me - or anyone else - which will convince you that a particular area is safe, so I suggest you come for a visit and see for yourself.

I will admit that there are some parts of Detroit that are a freak show, but I don't go to those areas, so they don't scare me. I suggest you pick a long weekend and plan a visit. Not just a holiday weekend in and out. A real live long weekend so you can explore the part of area that appeals to you most.

If you're loaded, I suggest Birmingham. There you will find one of the nicest little towns in America. The folks are a bit snooty but they sure do have a nice town.

Where ever you decide to land, I suggest it is wwithin 10 miles of your place of business. Commuting can be a drag, so draw a big circle around work place X and search ithin that circle.

All in all, metro Detroit is really quite livable. If hubby is comfortable here, and if he loves you, then you should at least come for a visit.

I grew up in the suburbs and now live just over a mile from the Detroit city limits. The areas I grew up and live in now are both very safe and great areas for children. Like all big cities, there are good and bad areas. I have lived in this area for 40 years and have never been a victim of a crime and I don't know anyone that has. Sure, I had a window in my car broken once, but that was in Chicago.

If you are concerned, talk to your husband about the area you want to move to. Pick somewhere that you will both be happy.

We moved to metro Detroit a couple years ago. We LOVE it, here. Detroit gets a bad rap and does have a high crime rate, but you'd have to live in the neighborhoods where it occurs most. We love going downtown to all the festivals, concerts, and sporting events. Detroit sits on the Detroit river and it has a beautiful river walk. There are so many suburbs around the Detroit area. Move with an open mind...we did!

I too love Detroit but I could NEVER live there again. Here are three reasons why you should not move to Detroit;

1. Economy. Detroit and the State of Michigan has a poor economy. There are NO JOBS AVAILABLE unless you have a connection and you know someone who can get you a job.

2. Crime. Detroit has been ranked as the most dangerous city in the United States of America and the most Dangerous City in Michigan.

3. Education. Detroit has the worst education system you can find in the state and in the United States. The public school system says they need more money but the truth is, they waste half of the funding they get and Detroit has a high dropout rate.

Absolutely don't come back right now. The economy in Michigan is terrible, 5,000 people applied for 300 job openings at Walmart, depending on who you listen to one in 80 or one in 30 homes is in foreclosure here, our taxes have just been raised, and the entire state is depressed and in recession. Forget about moving here. Our violent crime reputation is exaggerated in my opinion, but I don't think our crime rate really matters when deciding to relocate here in light of the fact that we are in a recession and won't bounce back for probably a decade.
