You mean call the police and have him put in jail for the night??
He would have to be accused of something for that.
Do you really see jail as a nice warm safe secure place to get a meal and be on your way in the morning?? I think not!
However you have asked a sensitive question! but I will try an answer that is not offensive, Look up on the Internet the closest homeless shelter, Find out how to get there, draw a map, Walk to the man, I am sure he will tell you to go away, but offer to walk with him to a shelter, put him on a bus going to the shelter, drive him there, and if all else fails, leave him the directions to the shelter. There are lots of ways to help, and you posting here says you are not one to just turn your back on people in need. Be careful about putting anyone involved with the police in any way, Believe me you will not be helping the man that way.

Duct tape is right. I volunteered at a homeless shelter for two years and the police will bring homeless people there.
Contrary to popular belief, not all homeless people are carrying weapons and are no good. I met all types when I volunteered. I met hard working men with jobs who just needed a place to stay until they found a home, I met mothers with children, I met single women who had relied on a man and had to start over and so many other decent people.
I hope all policemen don't feel the homeless are a pain and nothing else. They are people, too.

With every day pass, our country is getting into more and more trouble. The inflation, unemployment and falling value of dollar are the main concern for our Government but authorities are just sleeping, they don’t want to face the fact. Media is also involve in it, they are force to stop showing the real economic situation to the people. I start getting more concern about my future as well as my family after watching the response of our Government for the people that affected by hurricane Katrina.
According to recent studies made by World Bank, the coming crisis will be far worse than initially predicted. So if you're already preparing for the crisis (or haven't started yet) make sure you watch this video at http://www.familysurvival.tv and discover the 4 BIG issues you'll have to deal with when the crisis hits, and how to solve them fast (before the disaster strikes your town!) without spending $1,000s on overrated items and useless survival books.

If there's a shelter in your town, try calling it directly and asking if they have volunteers who can go get the poor guy. The police will probably take him there, too, but will take forever to do anything unless it's an emergency or the guy's panhandling. Even though the temperature doesn't get quite that cold here, we have two or three places downtown and when the temperature drops, the homeless men know where to go for a hot meal and warm bed. There are even volunteers who go looking for people who DON'T come in on their own.

Yes if it were cold. I have taken some of the homeless hot cocoa and blankets before because there werent places in my small town for them to go.
Some people thought i was crazy because they made choices that put them in that position but i just thought who am i to judge and if i am able to help a little and i dont then that doesnt say much about who i am.

I wouldn't call the police on him, I might call the emergency shelter and ask them to go help him. I think that would be the kinder thing to do. I take issue with "poor" being a crime.
Oh and to the previous post- in some jurisdictions they will throw them in jail.
