thing that it sticks out of. The tips of the string is not visible throught the holes but you can see that there is string in there. How do I get the string out? THanks!

You have to remove the head and dismantle it as you would to restring it.

Turn it upside down & you'll see a segment on the head side,
which can be pushed in to unlock the head base cover.
Push in & twist the cover off the base to expose the reel.
Take the reel out by turning one tooth on the hub.
String gets bound up & fails to unwind properly.
Wind the string around reel, put end out through hole.
Replace reel on hub, turn to lock under tooth.
Replace cover & twist to re-lock key section.
Turn upright & re-start weed-whacker.
