This sounds like a loaded question from your teacher. Reagan is the reason that the religious right has so much pull in legislation. Anti-abortion, anti-gay, anti-single parent, anti-this, anti-that... Thank you, Reagan!

He wasn't that popular while he was president. Many of his policies as well as the scandals that kept cropping up during his presidency kept his approval ratings down. It wasn't until after he left office that he was considered a great president. The main reason he won in 1980 was because of mistakes made by Jimmy Carter. In 1984, people just didn't like his opponent, Walter Mondale so they voted for Reagan. This is based on my personal memories of his presidency. I was in my early 20s when he was elected president so I remember him well.

1. Timing. Reagan came to be president at the end of the Cold War and the fall of Communism. When he said "Mr. Gorbachev, take down this wall..." Everyone all over loved him for it. In retrospect it could be said that he was just "in the right place at the right time" but he did handle himself well.

2. Religious aspect... He introduced religion into politics as a partisan topic and got heavy support from the religious community.

3. He was president during a period of economic boom (until 87). Everybody's a Republican in a bull market!

He made American's feel good about themselves again after the scandals of the Nixon era and the defeatism of the Carter era.

He was not willing to accept co-existence with the Soviets and saw communism as a system that could be defeated.
