yes, i do think it does. an example would be Hitler, and the Nazi's hate of Jews, and their belief that they are superior to everyone else can be seen today in the middle east. groups like AL Qeada and Hezbollah both strongly dis-like Jews, and believe they are superior to everyone else. (Hezbollah has even brought back the Hitler salute)

oh yeah. history repeats itself a lot. look closely at say... a history book. i don't expect you to read the whole thing, but it won't take long till you see similarities. the question is, when does history not repeat itself? : )

i can think of a lot of instances. however, they're all trying to find a way out at once so i can't name them all....
first, you must understand why history repeats itself. the answer is simple: Human Nature. Human Nature never changes.

one thought that comes to mind is when Napoleon tried to invade and conquer Russia. he thought he could do it--he was being cocky. later, Hitler thought he could do the same thing, and failed. he too was cocky, and thought he was better than everyone else. perhaps it would have been better if he studied history...

Also, England had a civil war in the 1700s that ended in the beheading of a King-- Charles XVIII. that had never been done before, but the message got across that England had to be a republic. later, of course, they ended up taking the monarchy back when Oliver Cromwell died, hence the Glorious Revolution... but the repeating part is that in the French Revolution, they too executed a king--- Louis XVI-- in order to get a republic. this also did not work because it was too radical.

i'm sure i can think of more... but you might get bored. i can go on and on sometimes...

The current invasion of Afghanistan.
The British tried it several times during the 19th century and were beaten every time. On the last occasion an army of 16,000 men went in and only one survived.
The Russians tried it in the 1970s and 80s and were well beaten.
The present war has been going on for years with no end in sight and the only result has been to increase the amount of heroin coming onto the world market because the war lords have got themselves elected to the puppet government and can protect the trade that makes them so powerful and wealthy.

It's any easy answer for when something happens that is familiar to an event in history. Humans, just like other animals, are predictable therefore they tend to make similar decisions in similar situations. That is the basis of this quote:

"Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it"

NO. Who is THEY. I'm sick of hearing that expression. It's a myth. Things are repeated because the odds and probabilities of certain events occuring more than once are great. For something to be actually repeated, it would have to be exact in detail, not just nearly the same thing. If it's nearly the same thing, who's to say what the limits are. Come on all those who doubt my opinion. Let's see your examples and I'll tear them apart. Let's see, since most of the world was in WWI, then history repeated itself by having aother world war (WWII) which was just like the first one.

Let's bury this myth once and for all.
How's that for a passionate answer??

One thing that ALWAYS repeats is complacency and overconfidence in technology. Here's just 3 examples from the last 100 years.

Titanic-"Unsinkable", so much so that the thought of having enough lifeboats for 2500-plus passengers never crossed anyones mind.

Hindenburg-Greatest Zeppelin ever built, so much so that even using mega-flammable hydrogen to lift it was not considered a great enough risk not to use it.

Challenger-Space Shuttle travel was so common that we could have a public relations flight with a civilian on board.

Bad endings for all.
