History has shown that it works quite well. It's the cornerstone of free enterprise. A more flattering expression is that society will reward me in proportion to my contribution to society. Substitute company or business for society and it still holds. History has also repeatedly shown that socialism, which disconnects reward from contribution, doesn't work.
