It delivers nutrient rich blood to the baby and also serves as the exit for waste that the baby produces while in the womb. It is also the way oxygen is delivered to the baby. Without this cord, the baby could not survive.

Umbilical Cord Function

the umbilical cord supplies the developing fetus with nutrients and oxygen, and also removes waste products and carbon dioxide away from the fetus. The nutrients dissolved in the maternal blood are transferred from the maternal blood to the fetal blood through the umbilical cord. The umbilical cord also acts as a structure that sustains and holds onto the fetus while it develops togather with the help of the placenta. The final job of the placenta is to secret hormones, during pregnancy a wide variety of hormones are secreted in the female body. At the onset of labor, the placenta is one of the main organs that secretes oxytosin to bring about contraction of the uterus wall and the dilation of the cervix.

P.S: Its good to know that the placenta acts as a filter barrier allowing nutrients and certain antibodies and chemicals to enter. It prevents viruses, bacteria and some other harmful chemicals from entering the fetal blood with the exception of some such as HIV, Rubella virus and chemicals such as nicotine and alcohol. So any girls reading this, get your rubella vaccination and don't drink or smoke during pregnancy :]

only b) is right. It is not a site for hormone production, that is the placenta and maternal uterus/ovaries etc. The placenta is the site of nutrient and waste exchange. The cord does not form until well after implantation. When it is small, the embryo is attached directly to the chorion, or early placenta. The cord develops after blood vessels are formed. .
