Wondering if anyone has any placenta previa success stories. I just went for my 20-week Ultrasound (i'm actually 19 weeks and 5 days) and was informed that my first baby is healthy but that I have placenta previa. Not sure if it is complete or marginal - wasn't told. I'm terrified, however. I don't want to lose this baby as I've heard horror stories of hemmorhaging and fetal death. Anyone out ther who can set my mind at ease?Thank you.

You are way too early in your pregnancy to worry about a placenta previa. Many women have previas at this point, and the vast majority resolve themselves later in pregnancy. Around 30 weeks, you will have another ultrasound. If the previa is still present, then you will need to deal with it. Until then, why worry about something that is temporary and will cause no adverse health effects? Human nature causes us to worry, but what a waste of energy!

"Placenta Previa is much more common in early pregnancy than at term. During routine second trimester ultrasound, the placenta is observed to cover the cervix in 5-20% of pregnancies. However, because of the growth of the uterus though out the pregnancy, more than 90% of early Placenta Previa's covert to a normal location by the time of delivery."

"More than 90 percent of the time, placenta previa diagnosed in the second trimester corrects itself by term."

"Only around one in ten women (or 10%) who have a low-lying placenta in early pregnancy will go on to have placenta praevia."

I realize this question was asked years ago, however, I feel it's necessary to assure anyone who has placenta previa things will be fine. I had this condition with my first pregnancy 48 years ago. Long before ultra sounds were around to detect a problem. I went into labor at 11pm and I began hemorrhaging at 4am. I called my doctor and was told to get to the hospital immediately. The staff did an x-ray to see where my child's head was and they were unable to examine me, so they kept looking and guessing how far dilated I was. My beautiful little girl was born at 9:14am. She had swallowed a lot of blood, but she was absolutely fine. I had a regular MD, no OB-GYN in those days. He did a marvelous job removing all the placenta as it had broken apart. I did spend 4 days in the hospital but had no more excessive bleeding at all. I went on to have a second child 20 months later with no problems at all. Don't be frightened if you have this condition. It's serious, but certainly not the worst thing that can happen and it doesn't mean you have to have a C-section either.

Don't freak out yet... I am 38 weeks pregnant currently and at 20 is weeks I was also diagnosed with placenta previa.. mine placenta corrected itself and and all is well. As the baby grows there is a good chance it will shift the placenta. If for some reason yours doesn't correct itself, your doctor will plan on a c-section to take necessary precautions and you might be on bedrest at the end.

Don't worry. The horror stories are from people who gave birth without knowing about the placenta previa. Once you know you have it, a simple c-section will take care of it. A vaginal birth is what makes it risky.

Relax and find comfort in the words "healthy baby." You will likely have to have a c-section. Don't borrow things to worry about for now.

Read this site and the words of advice about not going into a panic if you are diagnosed with previa in your second trimester.

Hang in there. *HUGS*

I'm in the same situation I've just got off the phone to my midwife she told me not to stress that there is still the chance of the placenta moving and if it doesn't then they will keep a closer eye on you and yes you will have to have a c-section you should have a ob app made 3 to 4 weeks after your last scan if not ring the hospital and speak to the midwife on duty they will tell you over the phone your best outcome

Oh sweetie,

I'm sorry you got scared. You will not lose this baby from this. You may have to have a C-section if it is complete (maybe not). Your doctor will watch you, you may have to be on bedrest...it may move yet.

Call your doctor and make him/her spend time with you...be open and clear with your fears. Most of the women who experience this are just fine!

Though this is happening dont stress it too much . You will actually be monitored through your pregnancy real close and they will stay on top of it all.
Its those who dont know about things that have more problems.
You can hemorrage or have a fetal death in a normal preg, so leave it in Gods hands.

I have a friend who had that, she took it easy. The baby is now 7 years old. Hope everything goes well. Best Wishes.
