Kids go through a lot of different changes in their teens. There is a lot of pressure on them to act certain ways, get good grades, peer pressure to try to be popular and fit in, etc. There's also the hormonal changes that affect them. They are still a child in many ways while also being pressured to take on more responsibility as they get closer to adulthood to prepare them for their future. They may have a lot of things going on at home as well and feel that they have no one who will understand what they are going through and have no one that they trust enough to talk to about these things. It's a time when people question who they are and what they are. They don't know if the things that they feel are normal. For some kids it's just really hard to deal with all of that.

I personally think that the younger generation are just easily influenced by their peers. Hopefully, you'll soon come to realize that high school is just a 4 yr phase. Just keep pushing yourself, have fun and focus on school. If you do well academically during high school, you'll most likely be very successful as an adult.

I know exactly what you mean about screwed up kids. It's a matter of maturity level and whether the parent actually disciplining (sp?) them.

Its a phase that many teens go through. They don't realize how screwed up they are.
