Nirvana's a much better band than foo fighters. Nirvana came out with consistently good albums, where Foo Fighters really seem hard pressed to come out with one. Even if Kurt Cobain hadn't killed himself, Nirvana was probably going to disband. He just had enough of it. No question though, that Nirvana is much better than Foo Fighters.

Nirvana in terms of influence, Foo Fighters in terms of actual PLAYING.
However, although I prefer Colour and the Shape/Foo Fighters to Nevermind or In Utero, Nirvana wins because of Kurt as an icon and songwriter, and Dave as a drummer.

Dave is doing a great job! Though nirvana was always om a whole new level! Kurt definitely was a better vocalist and songwriter but Dave isn't far behind! Plus he hangs out with everyone and is a nice guy(eg: Lemmy)!

Kurt Cobain is NIRVANA!!! Dave Grohl made a name for himself playing for Nirvana... Dave Grohl is Foo Fighters. Therefore I conclude without NIRVANA, Foo Fighters would not exist!

Both bands are very good, each in it's own way.
Nirvana wouldn't have been what it was without Kurt, but the entire band was composed of highly talented, skilled musicians.
If it came down to a battle of the bands contest, I would choose Foo Fighters, just for their raw energy, musical complexity, aggressive vocal style, and sharp social opinion.
It also helps that they are all still alive.

Nirvana is better than the Foo Fighters, hands down. When Kurt died Nirvana just couldn't go on since they had lost their lead singer.

Kurt Cobain's death ruined any future for Nirvana, because Kurt was Nirvana. However, it didn't ruin what the band had already done when he was alive. And to answer your question, Nirvana wins over the Foo Fighters hands down, even though I do like the FFs.
ps: Cobain not Kobane. Until you can at least spell the man's name right, I don't think that you should be making any judgements about his contributions to anything.

foo fighters are my 2nd favorite band as a band i give them a 5/5 and a 99% there amazing nirvana is my 15th favorite band and as a band i give them a 4.5/5 and a 90% there both amazing but i like guitar driven alternative rock (foo Fighters genre) more then i like guitar driven grunge rock (nirvana genre)
