For the same reason they allow so many other bad things to happen - it's in the best interest (short-term) of Big Business. They run things, those people we call politicians are just puppets. There are some who want to make a difference and change things but the media cuts them out so that they can't be heard.

When Americans start voting with their wallets and not with their emotions then things will change (don't support Big Business). But it's going to take something truly catastrophic for that to happen. Wait for global warming to kick our @$$s then things will change for the better.

It is amazing how much lack of coordination there can be in this world....you'd think that when they discovered the "dead zone" the first step would have been to put limits on the nitrogen added to the soil....
But even before the "dead zone" issue, there were problems with severe depletion of the fish down there, and the killing of turtle who got trapped in the fisherman's nets that would not use special releases to let the turtles escape...they claimed it might cost them a few fish! This took years of legal battles to resolve, so if they have to travel further out to sea now a days, I am not feeling too bad for them.
Bottom line: because Americans think about the cost of things first and the consequences later.

because some people are under the impression that etanol is the answer for the energy crisis. this is rediculous because ethanol lowers gas milage and even if it was a good idea it isnt feasible because for there to be enough ethanol for the whole us while still maintaining an equal amount of corn produced for food, the whole country would need to be a corn field. Politicians use things like ethanol and global warming as foundations to run on. I use these two as an example because they seem like pertinent issues however when you do some actual research on the topics you will find that global warming has happened before on planet earth long before we were around and is just a trend due to different phases of the sun and that ethanol is a joke. However, politicians are smart enough to know that if you just throw some fancy words out at voters and preach fire and brimstone to scare them they will probably vote for you. My advice for you would be for you to email any politician that is running on he or she's stances on ethanol and ask them why they aren't more concerned about a better alternative fuel such as solar energy or hydrogen to name a few. oh and on top of that, have you seen the price tag on a gallon of milk lately or an ear of corn. research that too and check out the rise in corn as a commodity

i dunno really. Probably because that stupid F'R al gore is telling everyone that load of BS about global warming. Since hes got everyone from elementary school to elderly men and women believing that the world is going to flood people are rushing to provide more environmentally friendly powersources. If they realized that humans arent the cause of warming they wouldnt have been forced to produce ethanol based cars along with other alternative fuels. Now, the only good thing i can think of thats come of this is that it seems to have spurred many inovative technologies. thats always a PLUS!!
but c'mon would there really be soo much ethanol if people knew we werent the problem? No, and they wouldnt have to grow so much corn therefore less fertilizers.

watch this video too. you'll like it. Look at how scared that have children. They're terrified that everyont is going to die!!!

I too am disgusted hon. To me i would plant the corn using good old fashioned fertilizer.. it did its trick before farming started disappearing....so perhaps that is why Americans have come up with another way... Unfortunately no one seems to care about any other form of life... take it from an animal rights person.

the US, as all other countries, allow a lot of things to happen all on the pretext that it 'boosts the economy'
why do all the countries in the world continue to allow factories to spew and deplete the ozone?
why do all the countries stand idly by while there are people starving?
there are a lot of whys in this world...

Sad. You'd hope people would be more far-sighted than their quarterly reports. The government, the EPA, FDA, FCC etc. have become nothing more than a protection racket for the corporate world. At this point, I'm not sure if it can be fixed.

I don't care nearly as much about the dead zone as the increased prices that I am paying for food products -- all for the further enrichment of Archer Daniels Midland. Which has, on evidence, a superb group of lobbyists.

Because money is more important than the environment to America, which is obsessed by money- and to think that people think oil spills are bad....

Because we have yet to become completely reliant on completely clean fuels, and we wont be for probably another hundred years or more.
